Virtual Crafting

I just signed up for my first online craft class – Sewing Studio with Diana Rupp, owner of Make Workshop in NYC – and I'm pretty excited to get started. Although I've been sewing for ages, I'd like a refresher on some of the more technical skills. This class gives step-by-step instructions on sewing darts and zippers, perfecting tailoring and fit, and working with bias tape. You can ask the teacher any questions you have along the way, and access the videos as many times as you like, so there's no worrying if you miss something. One of the course projects is a skirt, so I'm looking forward to using up my overflowing fabric stash on one (or two or three...).

If you don't want to shell out for an online course, there are lots of free tutorials and videos out there; YouTube is probably the most comprehensive resource (just type "crafts" or "knitting" or "70s string art" into the search box). Crafts Beautiful (based in the UK) features cute video projects such as Make Your Wellies Glow in the Dark, and Make Your Own Kilt Pin in Minutes. And check out Howcast, which offers how-tos in lots of different areas of life (oral hygiene?), including crafts and hobbies. Now get to class!
