I love the way a colour or pattern can evoke a certain feeling or memory. Last week I needed a homemade gift, but I had no time to head to the fabric store. Luckily, I made table runners for my wedding (five years ago already!), I had bought yards and yards of a blue and brown floral print fabric that I absolutely loved.
The remnants of that project ended up as a tote bag. My wedding was in September, so to me, this print conjures the feeling of fall, family and love (yep, cheesy, I know). I used the same fabric for the inside as well, which wasn't my intention, but I sewed the zipper into the fabric before I knew what I was doing. And by the way, if you're looking for an impressive-yet-easy zippered inner pocket, check out this tutorial. It takes a bit of fiddling with the iron, but it's worth it.
A couple of new fabric lines (that I think could be used to make some lovely heirloom projects) have caught my eye lately: David Butler (husband of textile celeb Amy Butler) is debuting a brand of guy-friendly prints (via Tree Fall), and designer Lotta Jansdotter has produced a range of plant-inspired designs, coming out in November.
Do you have a favourite fabric, colour or pattern that speaks to you?
