Inspiration Thursday: Rouge Valley Quilter's Guild show

Last Sunday was rainy and grey, but there was a lot of sunshine on display at the community centre in Ajax, Ont. That was the day I attended the Rouge Valley Quilter's Guild biannual quilt show and checked out some gorgeous quilts made by the guild's members.

Make sure you click on the photos in the gallery above to get a closer look. I spent the most time admiring the stunning appliqué garden quilt in the centre of the second row. It was packed with flowers, vines and bugs of all kinds – grasshoppers, ladybugs, dragonflies, even a snail.

Besides the quilts on display, there were several vendors selling lovely thread, fabric and notions. (And who doesn't love buying a cute fat quarter – or six – at these events?)

My favourite was Log Cabin Yardage, which carries a nice array of fabric, including Dr. Seuss prints that feature that delightful holiday sourpuss, The Grinch. I couldn't resist, and ended up taking home a half-dozen fat quarters. Perhaps I'll make a Grinch-y tree skirt for Christmas!

I stopped to talk with Log Cabin's owner, Nicole Brewster, a decidedly modern quilter with a great sense of humor. She's shipping fabric all over Canada now ($5 for orders under $100 and free for anything over that) and is planning to expand to a bricks-and-mortar location soon. How excited am I for a new local fabric store?

This was just the kind of inspiration I needed to get the creative juices flowing again. Have you been to any good quilt (or other craft shows) lately?
