7 steps for taking great food pics with your phone

We're always taking pictures of our food in the Test Kitchen. At every stage in a recipe's development and retest a photo is snapped so we have a visual record of what the food looks like. We use these images to help plan the photography for upcoming issues. Of course we also just love taking pictures of food that inspires us in our daily lives. Whether it's meals we cooked, markets, places we've eaten at, etc. There's always a reason to take a quick pic. And increasingly these are done with our phones. Here are 7 quick tips to help you get the best food pics you can with your phone: 1. Turn off the flash. Use natural light as much as possible. Fish Tacos 2. Take time to compose your shot ensuring that the food is the highlight. Rustic Apple Cake 3. Steady yourself and the camera. Tuck your elbows in to your sides, hold your breath, or use a prop/mini tripod to hold the phone steady. This means fewer blurry pictures. 4. Play with angles. Move the phone around to see if the shot looks better from overhead, straight on or from an angle. You'll be surprised how much this can change the look of the same shot. And move yourself around too, take a few steps forward, backward or to the side to determine where the best shot is. 5. Explore your phone's camera settings and filters. If you're able to adjust things like ISO and white balance, do it! Even if you don't know what these things mean, just take multiple shots with multiple settings and over time you'll get the hang of what is best to do when. shore lunch 6. Use apps. There are plenty of camera phone apps out there that offer different effects. A great one for food shots is an app that mimics the macro settings of a digital camera. This means that the lens focuses on one thing with the rest of the image being a little soft and out of focus. Wholegrain Waffles 7.
