Mmmmm ... chocolate

I'll take one please!

I'll take one please!

For those of you that have read some of my previous posts, you know I just LOVE my chocolate. Actually, it's a bit of an obsessive relationship. I always think about it and I try so hard to refrain from giving in, but at the end of the day the temptation just overwhelms me and I have to have a piece. To all those who empathize with my delicious obsession you'll be happy to hear that today, Cadbury announced that its oh-so-yummy Dairy Milk chocolate will receive Fair Trade Certification. Cadbury's British and Irish markets will be the first to receive certification by Summer 2009, and hopefully soon after, so will Canada.

I've always been a big fan of Cadbury's Dairy Milk, and I especially love the bars I buy at Heathrow airport. For some reason, the bars across the pond so rich and delicious! Now I can buy them with a good conscious that the cocoa farmers in Ghana are being treated fairly. I can't wait until Canadian Cadbury bars will also be Fair Trade Certified.

What's you're favourite chocolate? Do you try to buy Fair Trade chocolate?

How great is that?! Such a large company being Fair Trade certified. Fabulous! I do love chocolate, but I can't say that I buy it all the time. When I lived in England, my son adored a brand of fair trade chocolate you could get at their major supermarket. That got me started on it, but I haven't picked up on that again since returning to Canada. I've tried a few kinds, but have not been as impressed with the flavour. Will keep trying.

And if you are a chocolate lover, than you will have to make the pilgrimage to Cadbury World....visit http://www.cadburyworld.co.uk.

Definitely anything made by Green and Black's. It is fair trade and some of the bars are even vegan. The chocolate is exquisite and I usually only need a couple of bites to satisfy my craving. Since they are more expensive it helps me to limit my chocolate intake as well! I'm particularly fond of the almond, and the butterscotch!

I was so happy to read about this and can't wait till the Cadbury's here is all fair trade. Till then, Green & Blacks is great. And they're coming out with yummy Butterscotch mini eggs for Easter! Will definitely have to get some of those!

    This is a great step!
But please never stop questioning how our every day products are produced!

    1) Push for Fair trade sugar as well! (an often overlooked fair trade issue).

    2) Be aware of the fair-trade certification process. If a major producer like Cadbury starts putting a massive demand on fair trade producers, can they sway the certification process? Remember that fair trade cocoa is not the majority, and companies have to pay for the fair trade inspection process.
