What would you green? And a fantastic giveaway

Are you almost green?

Are you almost green?

James Glave, author of Almost Green, would build a green writing shed. In fact, he did build one in the front yard of his home in B.C. In his book, Glave writes about the trials and tribulations (and constant scorn from his father-in-law) he faces while on his mission. Along the way, Glave makes many other environmental changes.

If you could green one part of your home, what would it be and why?

Just subscribe to my blog and post a reply here for your chance to win one of four copies of Almost Green. I'll randomly select a winner on Monday, October 19.

Good luck!

i am nowhere almost green but i am working away at it - i am choosing eco-friendly cleaning products and personal care items. we installed dual-flush toilets last year...what next? i know you said which part of your home, but i am thinking about the contents of my closet - i need to start buying eco-friendly clothing - organic cotton, bamboo, hemp...and wear more layers of them to keep the thermostat turned down! i am really looking forward to reading what others would do - i would love to instal solar panels but it is just too costly still.

my roof! I would have a greenroof and grow food on it.

  3. Andrea B Says:

For me it would be my kitchen. It is the most used room in the house. I would love to have the most energy efficient appliances possible to conserve energy and to save a bit of money also.

  4. Skipp Says:

I would greenify my sunroom. Not sure how to greenify a room that doesn't have electricity or heat. But I would.

I would like to replace my elderly appliances with more energy efficient ones but for now I'm working on cleaners.Vinegar and baking soda are replacing chemicals and the results are good and the cost is way less.Bathroom, kitchen, windows, it's amazing what these two will clean.

I would love to green my bedroom. My place is like a bachelor suite so this is the room that i am constantly in.

I would like to make my kitchen more green. Judyt the other day I realized how much my family of 6 throws away. I recycle but I do not have a compost. A compost would be a great way for more kitchen to be more green. As well I would like to replace my old appliances with new more efficiant appliances.

  9. Laura Says:

Definitely the kitchen. More composting facilities, new appliances, a more energy smart window, etc. etc. etc.

  10. Evelyn Says:

The bathroom... I should be using green cleaners, but what disenfects? what about the toilet bowl? what about hair dye? what about shampoo and soap? There is a lot I need to learn and I really need to change.

  11. Jeannine Says:

I would like my laundry room to be more green with a more efficient washer and dryer....I do loads of loads!!! (yes, pun intended)

  12. Burcu Says:

Kitchen because there are lots of appliances to use. I would like to recycle more as well.

  13. Mystique Says:

Definitely my kitchen! I am always in there.

  14. Debbie W. Says:

Remember those old insulated drapes we had as kids?
Well, maybe some of us might not be as old as me. :)
I would like to go green with my window coverings. The insulated drapes hold the heat in the winter, and shield the heat in the summer. I think it's time to go back in time.

  15. sandra p Says:

I wold like to grren my whole home by installing solar panels. It would run my AC in the summer and provide warmth in the winter. All renewable via the sun. Saves resources and money.

  16. sean pynaert Says:

I would love to green up my kitchen because so much energy is wasted there, if there were alternatives it would be better for the Earth.

  17. Dianne Says:

If I could green something it would be heating my home. I don't like being a consumer of natural gas or electricity and would love to heat and power my home with solar panels.

If I could green my plumbing that would be such a great way to conserve water....there is this new building in my city that takes the used water I guess after filtering it and uses it for the garden/lawn. What a great idea!

  20. Pat Says:

The bathroom and kitchen are both contenders, but I think I would first choose the bathroom as there are so many ways to "green" the room....from shampoos to a low-flush toilet.

  21. Linda C Says:

I would love to greenify our families washroom.I would love to cut back on water usage, greenify the shampoo's and body washes and have solar panels to provide power for the hot water.

  22. Jackie Says:

I would green that closet that holds my furnace and hot water heater. I have a certified original furnace! It's from about 1975 and is in perfect shape, actually. But green it's not. I'm sure it, and the ductwork in our crawlspace could use a big overhaul (can you say heat pump, new furnace and ductwork repair?). And if I had the money, I'd throw in one of those hot water on demand units. Just think - with that changed, I'd green my home big time and get some space in the closet for storage to boot! Oh, one can dream.

  23. Kat D Says:

If I had the money I would "green" our energy consumption by installing solar panels and wind collectors. I would also "green" our water consumption by 1) capturing rain water and using it for watering the gardens and 2) recycling household water thru a grey water system.

  24. Jessica L Says:

I would green my yard - grow organic vegetables, compost, etc. so I knew where my produce was coming from!

  25. Katrina C Says:

I would green my floors. The home I am in now has some hardwood, but a lot of carpet and linoleum as well. I know the dust and particles from these man-made materials are not great for the air quality in my home, but they're also not very aesthetically pleasing. I would prefer materials like ceramic tile, hardwood, bamboo and cork. Better for me, better for the environment, and MUCH better looking.

  26. Sylvie Charbonneau Says:

I would love to install solar panels and a solar hot water heating system. However, the first thing that should probably change are my ancient laundry appliances. They are probably the biggest energy drainers in my house.

  27. Joanne Says:

If I could afford it, I would replace all the windows in our house. I know we are using too much energy to make up for the cold winds that blow in, but for now I make do with weatherstripping and heavy curtains.

  28. Jason Says:

I would green my washroom because I do not like using harsh chemicals to clean my washroom.

We have always lived pretty green, but if I had a sudden influx of money it would be to install solar panels. And if we had an increase in income,I would go entirely organic (instead of partially) in our food choices. Right now I can't afford all organic foods but I sure can wish.

  31. myna lee Says:

    Paint with ecological paint.

  32. Melanie McLaughlin Says:

I'd green my yard and plan to when the yard is mine and not a rental property. I'd love to have a clothes line, a garden to grow my own veggies, solar lights for my patio and more. We plan to buy our home next year and I can't wait

  33. Linda Fast Says:

I have greened my balcony, luckily I have my apt. in the back of the building. Here I have a composter, which I use year round. In the spring I fill the bottom of my planters with everything from the composter whether it is composted or not. I cover it with dirt which I save from year to year. I plant vegetables and flowers in my pots and do not use fertilizer or sprays. I have a clothes line strung up in the corner. I have solar lights wired on the corners of the railings to add an ambiance as well as a small table with soy candles. The balcony is very tidy and inviting despite it being green.

  34. Tim Wright Says:

I live in an apartment that faces west. In the morning, I get the full benefit of the rising sun. It is excellent in the winter, and in the summer it is cooler in the evening.

  35. Debbie B Says:

I do as much as I can to be green but I wish I had solar heating. I think that would be so awesome and it is something I have always wanted to do.

  36. Heidi Canton Says:

You might say that my bathroom is already green. I'm having a little mold problem. My bathroom is in desperate need of a redo - water efficient toilet, low-flow shower head, new paint (who knows? Might even paint it green!) and some sort of covering for the shower area between the top of the existing tile and the ceiling (about 2 feet of space). If there was some way of getting an energy effient fan for this windowless room, that would be an absolute bonus. Once the bathroom is revamped, bring on the green cleaners!

Instead of putting in hardwood floors I am going to get Bamboo and I am starting to use cleaning products that are more green oriented.

  39. Shelly Says:

I would green my bathroom - those cleaners I use are killer on the sinuses

  40. Ash Says:

Although there are many areas in my house i would like to "green", i think my kitchen is the number one spot- because we have a tendency to accumulate a lot of garbage although I try to recycle as much as i can! I would also like to compost. Additionally, I would like energy efficient appliances and not waste food. :)

  41. carol Says:

I'd love to use windpower for electricity.

  42. carol Says:

oops I forgot to mention for the whole house!!
