6 secrets for beating the heat

It is a hot one out there, and I’m not sure there are any signs of it cooling off. I’ve been spending my many sticky days trying to figure out how to beat this heat, and I’ve come up with a few ideas. Let me know if they help you this summer.

1. Invest in a fan. I didn’t have one for the first part of this heat wave. I would be up all night because I was so hot, then thinking about how hot I was. It was terrible. I went out and spent $50 on a fan and am tickled pink with the results. My bedroom is cool enough at night for me to have a sheet pulled up over my body.

2. Close every single blind in your house. I couldn’t believe the difference this made. My house is definitely cooler than outside, and I know my dog appreciates it.

3. Make Popsicles. Nothing seems to be quite as refreshing as frozen fruit deliciousness. All you have to do is buy yourself a mould and you’ll be enjoying these cool treats frequently in this summer heat. 4. Put a pitcher of water in the fridge. Water out of the tap doesn’t get as cold as fridge water. I live to add some lemons and lime, or sliced cucumber, to the pitcher. It’s a very refreshing drink.

5. Become a night owl. I don’t me you have to stay up all night, but wait until the sun goes down to do the outdoorsy things you enjoy. I love going on evening walks, or heading up to a local pub to enjoy a beer on the patio – out of the scorching sun.

6. Get inside. I know, that’s a weird tip. We want to be outside in the summer. But when it’s too unbareably hot, get thee to a movie theatre, art gallery, museum or library. They’re air conditioned, so a great place to hide from the heat for a few hours.

And don’t forget to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.
