If you have a competitive streak, we’ve got a workout for you. This week I got the chance to check out Toronto’s Spinout Cycle, the first spin gym in Canada to offer a Smart Studio which uses computerized bikes linked to a wireless display leader board. What is a leader board you ask? Here’s a bit of background behind this technology. The studio has computerized bikes which capture your distance, heart rate, speed, RPM and calories burned and then displays them on a screen in front of you like a standard bike computer. But here’s where it gets interesting: These wireless and ‘ANT+ ready’ consoles not only display your results on your mini screen in front of you, these metrics are also displayed on a large screen monitor (the leader board) at the front of the class. Does this horrify you or excite you? For me, it was a bit of both but it definitely got my legs moving faster than normal. Here’s the class getting prepped to sweat. You can ride anonymously, cycle at your own pace or join a race with the class. Depending on the instructor they can tell you to up your RPM’s, increase those calories or simply get your heart rate up. It’s a fun twist on your typical spin class and will let you know your progress the more classes you attend. For more ways to improve your cycling, check out these top 6 cycling tips.
