Why should you eat breakfast?

I'm certainly not a perfect eater (like, pass me that bag of chips), but there is a rule I always follow: eat breakfast everyday.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you may have heard, and skipping it can leave you feeling sluggish. Also, it could be why you're noticing your problem areas are becoming more, um, problematic.

One of my fave, easiest breakfasts - homemade cereal and some fruit!

One of my fave, easiest breakfasts - homemade cereal and some fruit!

Here are 3 reasons why you should eat breakfast everyday

1. It will help you lose weight.
Eating a healthy breakfast will help boost your metabolism, causing your body to burn more calories. If you don't eat breakfast, your body will hoard whatever fuel it has, slowing down the calorie-burning process.

2. It'll boost your energy.
Nothing is worse than feeling like you have low energy. Getting through the work day is tough enough, so don't deprive your body of much needed nutrients. Your brain and body will be much slower to react if it's low on fuel (food = fuel, fyi).

3. It can be fun and tasty.
If you're sticking to the same breakfast everyday, things will get boring pretty quickly. My fave breakfast is a delicious Toasted Apple Cinnamon Cereal (pictured above) from Brendan Brazier's The Thrive Diet. It fills me up for a while! I make it about once every two weeks and it takes all of 15 minutes to throw together. I also love tasty soft boiled eggs, avocado chocolate shakes (perfect for any chocolate-holic), oatmeal or any sort of homemade breakfast sandwich. Find what sort of healthy breakfast fits with your lifestyle and stick with it - once you see a few pounds dropping off you'll be happy.

The Bikini Boot Camp Diaries, Day 20 - The importance of breakfast and your chance to WIN!

102_0171Ah, Saturday. Finally, some time to focus on breakfast.

If you're like me, you're pretty rushed during the week and you have to make a special effort to find time for breakfast each morning.

Turns out the effort is worth it - research has confirmed that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

A study by Dr Mark Pereira and colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that skipping breaky increases your chances of becoming obese, developing diabetes or even having a heart attack.

They found that people who ate breakfast every day were a third less likely to be obese compared to those who skipped it. Folks who chowed down in the morning were half as likely to have blood-sugar problems, which increase the risk of developing diabetes or having high cholesterol, which is a known risk factor for heart disease.

The researchers believe that eating first thing in the morning can help to stabilize blood sugar levels, which regulates your appetite and energy. They suggest that if you eat breakfast, you're less likely to be hungry during the rest of the day and so you're less likely to overeat.

Their study found that people who eat whole grain cereals every morning are among those most likely to see the health benefits.

So bring on the whole grains!

I've got a 'Daily Dose of Breakfast' prize pack to give away from Kellogg's. It's designed to help you kick start your morning and it includes:

  • A handsome breakfast tray
  • Two bowls
  • Two spoons
  • Two cloth napkins
  • Kellogg's Guardian Cinnamon with a hint of vanilla flavour cereal
  • Kellogg's Guardian Original with a hint of maple flavour cereal
  • A Kellogg's Guardian stress ball

Kellogg's Guardian cereal is one of the few cereals on the market with psyllium fibre, plus it's low in fat and calories, high in fibre and made from the all-important whole grains.

For a chance to WIN, just Subscribe To This Blog and post a reply telling us about how you find time for breakfast each morning. Maybe you get up a little earlier. Maybe you spend less time on your eyeliner. Maybe you get breakfast organized the night before. You have until Saturday, June 6 to let us know. I'll announce with winner here on Sunday, June 7.

The latest weight-loss secret: breakfast

Today, I ate a chocolate for breakfast.

There was a whole box of them sitting on the kitchen counter, beckoning me with their sexy, mysterious fillings. I was powerless to resist their charms.

Although I was able to eat just one, I felt like I was being personally scolded when researchers reported (even more) evidence today that breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day.

The findings, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, support past studies that found that breakfast eaters are less likely to be overweight — and that eating a high-quality breakfast, rather than mindlessly mashing a chocolate into your greasy gob, is the key.

Using data from a national health survey of U.S. adults, researchers found that people who ate lower-calorie foods for breakfast tended to have a higher-quality diet over all.

Unfortunately, the study reported no findings about slackers with no willpower who start their day off by eating crap. I can only presume that they tend to be fat and sad over all.
