Remember to remember on Remembrance Day

[caption id="attachment_3371" align="alignnone" width="244" caption="Howard "Harold" Breidon on his dispatch motorcycle"] [/caption] Today, Remembrance Day, is the day that Canadians are asked to officially pay tribute to the sacrifices of the many military service men and women who have and continue to serve our country and many around the world in peacekeeping missions. Many of us have our personal links to the military service and veterans. For me, it's Grandpa Harold (Howard Breidon), my husband's grandpa who served as a dispatch rider in WWII. He was always quick to share his stories, and we even developed a family tradition of cutting wedding/anniversary cakes with a sword he brought home from the war. He was active in the Legion, took part in the Memory Project and visited Belgium in his later years to be recognized for his military contributions. Sadly, we lost Harold last year, but he has left us with a legacy of military honour that we continue to recognize. He was proud to have served in the war effort, but like most veterans, he'd be the first to say that war is not something he supports. Remembrance Day is not about showing support for war; it's about honouring those who gave of themselves so that the rest of us could enjoy the freedoms that we have today. And for heaven's sake, let's not argue about the colour of poppy we should wear. Let's give our veterans and military folk the respect and honour they deserve, today and every day.
