3 apps to help you have a safe New Year's Eve

If you're like me, you're probably finalizing your New Year's Eve plans. Maybe you're going out with friends and family for a nice dinner or going to a glamorous party to ring in 2014. Whatever your plans, it's important to be safe on such a celebratory night of the year. I know, I know, I sound like a nagging parent saying that, but it's true. Luckily there are three apps that make it easy to have a safe night out. 1. Uber One of my biggest concerns when I go out is how I'm going to get home safely, especially if I'm in an area I don't know. But thanks to Uber, you don't have to worry about finding the number for a cab company or depending on public transportation to get you home. Instead you just request a ride on Uber and a driver will arrive within minutes to take you home. You can even pre-arrange a pick-up. How convenient is that? The app will also let you upload your credit card number so you don't have to worry about having enough cash to get home. I'm so relieved I will never again have to panic about how I'm getting home after a night out. 2. Guardly I am a bit of a nervous person and I hate being alone late at night. Unfortunately being alone tends to happen on New Year's Eve, when you're walking in a dark parking lot to get to your car or waiting on the side of a road for your cab to come. But Guardly is an instant safety net. You set up Guardly with up to 15 safety contacts. If you all of a sudden feel uneasy while out you can activate the app which sends out a message or conference call to your safety contacts. The amazing thing is that the GPS will track your location during the call so your contacts know exactly where you are if an actual emergency situation occurs. So on New Year's Eve you can get home without worries, knowing you have a safety net in place. 3. BAC Alcohol Calculator New Year's Eve inevitably means that a glass of champagne—or five—will be consumed. And after a variety of drinks over a number of hours it can be hard to figure out if it's safe for you or others to drive. Thankfully BAC Alcohol Calculator will figure it out for you. All you have to do is input what drinks you consumed, over what time period and what food you ate—plus your personal stats like gender and weight. The app will calculate your blood alcohol level and even give you an estimate of when your level will be zero. Of course an app isn't foolproof, so don't hesitate to call a cab if you feel like you or your designated driver isn't fit to drive, that's what apps like Uber are there for. I hope everyone has a happy and, most of all, safe New Year's eve. Bring on 2014. How are you celebrating New Year's? Cocktail party photo by John Cullen
