Why I love Men's Mogels Silver Medal Winner Mikael Kingbury

I'll admit it. I can't stop watching the Olympics. Actually, right now, as I type this, I'm also watching the Canada vs USA Women's Hockey Game. Go Canada Go! Not only do I enjoy watching the events,, I love reading the back stories about the Olympians themselves. Men's Mogels silver medal winner, Mikael Kingbury, is a true inspiration. He wrote the words "Je vais gagner" which means "I will win" on a photo of the Olympic rings when he was only 10 years old. The night before he left for the Sochi Olympics, his mom, Julie Thibobeau, went to kiss him goodnight. She lay near him and said "Do you think that little 10 year old boy would be proud of you now?" "It was emotional", she said "because he was becoming an Olympian". He is living his dream. The strong bond between Mikael and his mom is clearly evident. He wears a yellow Livestrong bracelet in honour of his mom's successful battle with thyroid cancer. She was at his first mogels competition when is was 12 years old, days after her surgery. She wasn't able to talk but she was there, cheering him on from the bottom of the hill. These days, they go to the gym and workout together. They push each other harder, faster, better! She always hides candy and little love notes in his suitcase whenever he's on the road. Mikael says it makes him smile and it's the little push he needs to keep giving it his all and keep pushing onward. Stories like this one breathe life into the Olympics and I am honoured to be cheering for all these young Canadian Athletes. Congratulations Mikael Kingbury. You make us so very proud!
