Take the kindness challenge!

Helping pregnant woman Remember when you were a kid and you’d get friendly reminders about sharing, treating others with respect and learning to give as well as receive? In our busy adult lives, kindness sometimes falls by the wayside. But when everyone makes an effort to be friendly to their neighbours and helpful to strangers, the world really is a better place for all of us. That’s why Scouts Canada has extended a challenge to all Canadians to take part in Good Turn Week, which this year runs from April 26 to May 4. Scouts are taught to do something nice (aka. a good turn) for someone else every day of the year. Five years ago, Scouts Canada youth decided to make a week in which they would open this up to the rest of Canada, to inspire us all to do more random acts of kindness. Kaylee Galipeau, Coucil Youth Commissioner and chair of the National Youth Network for Scouts Canada says the list of good turns you can do is endless. “Shovel snow for your neighbours, help an elderly neighbour with their groceries—even something as simple as holding the door for someone is a good turn,” she says. “It’s anything you can do to make someone’s day a little bit brighter. You can share your deeds on Twitter, Facebook or the  Good Turn Week website, and check out the site for more inspiration and ideas of ways to spread kindness in your community. “If you’ve been on the receiving end of a good turn, it’s easy to say it’s a good feeling,” says Galipeau, but research shows the good-deed doers feel better too! Last year, Scouts Canada commissioned a study that found 51 percent of Canadians received a good turn at least once a month. “There are 365 days in a year,” says Galipeau. “We think we can do better.” And while small acts of kindness go a long ways, big acts are important too. This year Scouts Canada held a contest to find ideas for big ways to do good, and they chose 10 of those projects to fund.
