Should you have a back-up plan if your child misses the school bus?

SchoolBus2 The parents of a six-year-old boy are upset with their child's school after  learning that they don't have any policies in place for children who miss the school bus. Dad, Andrew Heubach said he panicked when his son, Lucas didn't exit the bus alongside his sister. He immediately called the school and left a message on the answering machine saying "I've been everywhere I possibly can - at this point in time, my son is missing." Lucas saw the school bus leaving and tried to chase it down before he decided to tackle the 15 minute walk home alone. His mom, Dawn Russell spotted him walking up the street about 30 minutes after he was supposed to be dropped off. "He said he missed the bus. When it hit me that he walked home from school, I felt sick because I know how busy that road is." Although the distance between school and home isn't very far, the walk does include a busy intersection. Lucas did not use the crosswalk because he couldn't find it. " He said...'the cars just let me go,' and my heart just went into my throat," said Andrew. " That's when I started losing it." Lucas's mom can't understand why there were no staff members available to assist him "He ran through the school ground where there should have been at least two...staff members out there who didn't notice anything had happened."  The school didn't learn about the incident until the following day and the Grand Erie District School Board is now investigating the incident. Who do you feel is responsible? Should the parents have a back-up plan? Should the school have a policy in place for children who miss the school bus?   photo courtesy of thoseguys119/flickr
