High/low: Metallic eye shadows

Looking to freshen up your beauty bag with something new? The easiest way to stay on trend (and on budget) is by picking up a metallic eye shadow. This fall, molten metals were seen in just about every shade, from blushed bronze and tinselly silver to canary yellow.

We also saw hits of heavy metals in a ton of new nail polish offerings, but I much prefer the trend on lids. When applied correctly it can look light and angelic. But it can easily go wrong if you don’t have the right product (too sparkly) or tools (sponge applicator). A botched outcome could make you look like a ’90s club kid — let us not forget “Electric Circus.”

When venturing into metallic eye territory, the most user-friendly option is a cream eye shadow. These buttery formulas let you slowly build up the intensity you’re after, and they’re also way easier to blend.

I’m loving these two formulas right now.

  • High: Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Illusoire, $36.
  • Low: L’Oréal Paris La Couleur Infallible Eye Shadow in Flash Back Silver, $11.

When I first tapped my finger on the top of each of these products, I was hit with the weirdest sensation – they felt so cushiony. That’s because they both use a gel to lock in all that shimmer, which results in a supersoft mousse-like texture. Both products are a cross between a cream eye shadow and loose powder.

Both have a long-wear formula and are jam-packed with sparkly goodness. Not the 6-year-old kind of sparkle – more of a micronized barely there one. In other words, a sophisticated sparkle. Upon first glance the colours look intense in their jars, but they go on rather sheer.

They stack up pretty evenly, but if I had to choose a winner it would be Chanel. It’s slightly easier to blend, which also makes it easier to build up the colour – it’s a close call, though. That being said, if you are looking to save money, definitely opt for the L’Oréal Paris shadow.

L’Oréal Paris La Couleur Infallible Eye Shadow is available at drugstores and mass-market retailers. Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow is available at select department stores.
