Like a creature of habit, as soon as the temps take a dip I want to wear denim 24-7. During the summer months I neglected my trusty jeans – they were relinquished to the inner depths of my closet, until now. Not only do I have the nagging desire to wear them, like all the time, I want to acquire more. My name is Julia and I am a denim hoarder.
My favourite kind of jeans are less about the details and more about the cut. I just say a big hell-no to rhinestone pockets and heavy embroidery and yes to great fitting jeans in a flattering cut and fabric. Personally, I'm favouring cropped jeans that hit just above the ankle this season. But I understand that they're not for everyone, plus they're a little trickier to style – picking the right footwear is crucial with a crop.
- Wear this: Nevada Military Pocket Jeans, Sears, $50.
- Not that: Nevada Jeggings, Sears, $50.
When it comes to jeans, you can't go wrong with either a straight-leg or a boot-cut style. They're both universally flattering cuts for all body shapes and heights. You can get the best of both worlds with a hybrid of the two styles, such as these Nevada Military Pocket Jeans. They're a fine balance between the straight-leg style with just a hint of a flare below the knee. I also like the wash of these cotton/spandex jeans. They're dark enough to dress up with a blazer but can transition into something a little more casual and cosy with an oversize cashmere sweater.
Now on to the body-hugging jeans on the right, the jeggings. These also happen to be a hybrid, one I wish had never been invented. It's a franken-pant – if jeans and leggings had a baby...you get the point. I guess skinny jeans just weren't skinny enough, so in 2010 we saw the popularization of denim jeggings (a.k.a. pull-on jeans). The main difference is that the jeggings fabric usually has polyester and a higher percentage of spandex in the blend. I've never met a pair I liked and these are no exception. They almost always bunch up around the ankles and unless you have an über-toned body they are NOT flattering.
I'd like to start a "Say No to Jeggings" movement. Will you join me?
