High/low: Striped maxi dress

As I packed away my summer wardrobe, I felt especially blue folding up my black and white striped Joe Fresh tank maxi dress. I lived in that swingy, strangely-forgiving-for-a-striped-dress beauty night and day this summer, giving it many opportunities to join me at work (under a shrunken jean jacket) and on weekends (over bathing suits on the occasions I lounged pool- or beach-side).

And though it's true, I could probably transition the piece well into winter, I was absolutely fixated on finding a long-sleeve alternative to said obsession, preferably in a heavier cotton or even a knit blend – imagine? I'd probably live on it and layer it over wooly tights over and over again. It's a big cosy sweater that goes all the way down to your ankles, enrobing you in super soft goodness. So the hunt was on.

And was surprised by how quickly I uncovered not one, but many striped dress options. I narrowed it down to these two. A perfect high-low option for stripe lovers this fall.

Nightcap Clothing Dress, $249, vs Old Navy, $46.94

Nightcap Clothing dress, $249, versus Old Navy sweater dress, $38.

On the left, we have one from Nightcap Clothing, weighing in at $249. On the right, this dress from Old Navy (which comes in three colour combos) is ON SALE NOW for $38. I don't think I need to say more, do I? I love the shot above, but there's also a really amazing black and midnight blue combo, which seems to be the stripe option of the season—move over, white and navy stripes.

These dresses do tend to be clingy, so layer them with something in a stiffer fabric – like a blazer or another jacket – but not a soft sweater or cardigan. Also try to pair the dress with a heeled boot. These lace-up options strike a perfect match between comfortable and polished.

So what do you think? Do you see yourself adding a striped dress to your wardrobe?
