Yet another collection during Toronto Fashion Week gave a nod to the edgy ’90s. The inspiration behind the Joe Fresh fall/winter 2013 collection was effortlessly cool Parisian street style. The Loblaw-owned brand is known as the mecca for all things bright, cheap, cheerful and preppy – making this collection a radical departure.
The collection was drained of colour, except for the highlighter pops of orange on the bottoms of the models’ shoes. The starkly monochromatic offering revisited all of the favourite items of bad girls, from motorcycle jackets to skinny black pants, camouflage pants and acid-wash jeans – not to mention loads of studs.
The two pieces that sparked a note with my magpie spirit animal were the black velvet skinny pants with rhinestone embellishments and the studly leather moto jacket that was surely inspired by the Burberry trophy jacket from a few seasons past. I’m crossing my fingers now that these two pieces will find their way onto the selling floor.
