We’ve all seen the primping that goes into a night at a major Hollywood awards ceremony – whether in the behind-the-scenes B-roll for a gossip TV segment or snaps on the pages of a celebrity rag. Now, you can get in on the action at home with step-by-step instructions for recreating Sarah Hyland’s gel mani from last night’s Emmys festivities. The Modern Family actress, wearing an emerald green CH by Carolina Herrera gown that she helped design, wanted burgundy nails to match her deep lipstick and contrast against the hue of her dress. To get the perfect negative-space mani, she looked to Red Carpet Manicure, an at-home LED gel polish brand. From left: Runway Red, Haute Couture and Camera Shy Using three shades of gel polish – Camera Shy as the base colour with a mix of Runway Red and Haute Couture on the tips – celebrity manicurist Christina Aviles created a no-chip mani with an art-deco vibe. To get the look yourself, you’ll need a starter kit that includes an LED lamp with a gel base and top coat as well as two to three polish shades. Follow the directions in your kit carefully to ensure that you cure each coat of polish correctly. Start with a base coat, then a layer of neutral nail polish. Next, paint your nail in a deep hue, avoiding a triangle at the base of each nail. If you don’t feel comfortable free-handing, you can use tape to block off the area, or remove the polish in the negative space with a little bit of acetone on a Q-tip (note: if you go this route, you have to make sure your base colour is fully set). Finish with a top coat. Once cured, this mani should last a week or more! You can also easily recreate this look with regular nail polish. Tweet us your pics @canadianliving if you try it out!
