Halloween makeup instructions: How to look like a cracked porcelain doll

Halloween parties are around the corner and coming up with a creative costume is always a struggle. Thankfully, MAC Cosmetics has drawn up two makeup designs for us (the first is shown below) to get the creative juices flowing. This look is inspired by a battered doll whose pretty surface has become cracked from wear and tear. If I can do it while sitting at my desk clutching a tiny handheld mirror, you can definitely do it in your bathroom at home.

The tool kit:

1. Concealer and foundation

2. A brow pencil (we used MAC Cosmetics Veluxe Brow Liner in Strawberry Blonde, $23)P

3. Flesh-tone eye shadow or shadow primer – or even concealer (we used MAC Cosmetics Paints in Bare Canvas, $24)

4. Bright blue eye shadow (we used MAC Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Electric Eel, $18)

5. Fuchsia blush (we recommend MAC Cosmetics Powder Blush in Dollymix, $25)

6. Burgundy lip liner (we used MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Currant, $18)

7. Bright pink lipstick (we used MAC Cosmetics Amplified Creme Lipstick in Girl About Town, $18)

8. Black eyeliner (we used Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black, $26)

9. Two sets of faux lashes (we used MAC Cosmetics 2 Lash, $19, for upper lashes and MAC Cosmetics 35 Lash, $19, for lower lashes)

10. Setting powder (we used Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, $19/0.17 oz)

The steps:

Step #1: Apply foundation and concealer so that you have a blank canvas.

Step #2: Fill in brows with a pencil. If you want an even more dramatic look, slick down brows with a clear brow finisher, minimize colour with concealer, then redraw  brows half an inch above your brow bone (as shown in MAC drawing).

Step #3: Prep your eyes with a neutral eyeshadow or primer, covering lids from brow to lash line.

Step #4: With an eye-shadow brush or applicator, draw blue shadow in your crease and below your lower lash line.

Step #5: Apply bright blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend.

Step #6: Block out lips with concealer.

Step #7: Line lips with a dark lip liner, exaggerating their shape.

Step #8: Fill in lines with a bright fuchsia lipstick.

Step #9: Set face with powder.

Step #10: With a waterproof black eye liner, draw holes and cracks along your forehead, mouth and cheeks.

Step #11: Brush mascara onto top and bottom lashes if they are light or white from the shadow primer.

Step #12: Apply lash glue to faux lashes one strip at a time. When glue becomes tacky, press lashes along both top and bottom lash lines.

And, the look is complete! Just add pigtails and a flouncy dress.
