Skin SOS: 3 super hydrating masks

“You look like your skin [on my face] has dandruff,” declares my sister. Ouch, that one hurt. But I couldn’t retort with a bitchy comeback because she’s right! I’ve been slacking, and not fine-tuning my skin care with the change in seasons. Which means it’s time for me to step up my skin care game and get diligent, more like militant, with my routine — and step number one is increasing hydration. My fall back if I need an upsurge of moisture is masking.

If you have the skin type that leans towards dry to very dry this is a step that can really change the feel, comfort and quality of your skin. One of the most gratifying parts is that the results are almost instantaneous. However the drawback from masking is that it’s a wee bit time consuming, each mask usually needs to sit on the skin for 10 minutes, plus. Solution: multitask! On Saturday mornings you can find me doing three-six masks while cleaning the house. At first it really creeped my boyfriend out, especially when I turned the corner into the living room while swifering and donning a serial killer-esque cloth mask. But now he’s desensitized and doesn’t even bat an eye.

Here are my MVP’s of hydrating masks.

FRESH Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask, $102.

FRESH Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask, $102.

FRESH Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask, $102, sephora.ca

It’s primary function isn’t just to hydrate, instead it’s been created to reveal softer, firmer and healthier-looking skin, immediately. Skin looks plumped, radiant and nourished due to the hydrating proporties, we can that the jicima root juice for that. The two reasons that make this a favourite mask’s is because it’s very calming on the skin and the formula’s texture is extremly unique. The cream has a velvety rich texture, yet at the same time it’s almost light and whipped with an immediate cooling effect upon contact.  Confusing description, I know, but it really is all of those things — and more.

NeoStrata Moisture Rescue Sheet Mask, $40.

NeoStrata Moisture Rescue Sheet Mask, $40,  Shoppers Drug Mart

Words cannot describe how much I love these NeoStrata masks. I’ve been addicted to them since I first laid eyes on them during a desk side with a NeoStrata PR professional a few years back. I remember her describing that it’s perfect for dehydrated and parched skin, the perfect treatment for “après ski.” These cloth masks come individually packaged and are filled with hydrating ingredients, however the star of the show is hyaluronic acid, a polymer naturally found in skin that helps jack up your skin’s moisture. Typically the ingredient is found in concentrations of 0.01-0.05 in creams and serums, but this mask has much more containing 0.15%.

Dermalogica Ultra Calming Releif Masque

Dermalogica Ultra Calming Relief Masque, $52.50

Dermalogica Ultra Calming Relief Masque, $52.50, dermalogica.ca.

This mask was introduced to me (and recommended) by my skin therapist, Amanda Matcham. She works at Dermalogica’s Canadian headquarters on King St. W. in Toronto. Matcham is a beauty editor’s favourite for many reason, but the main one is that the woman has magic hands. She also has an extensive knowledge base when it comes to skin health, and when I told her I was looking for a hydrating mask she suggested this baby. It’s a creamy calming treatment that contains the brands UltraCalming TM Complex that helps block inflammatory triggers. Meaning, if you are prone to redness and skin flare-ups you gotta try this!
