Pretty quick: 3 steps to the perfect self-tan

Spring is in the air, and as the days start to grow longer my hem lines are progressively getting shorter. Which means I need to do something about my ghostly white skin. I'm pale. My skin tone au natural looks like I could be an extra from the cast of "True Blood" -- yes, that pasty. I'd like some colour, but I don't want to look like an extra from "Jersey Shore." Somewhere in the middle would be nice, and without any damage from UVA/UVB rays, of course!

In my quest to achieve a slightly golden glow I've turned to sunless tanners. My current obsession is St. Tropez Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse ($38). Not cheap, I know, but it pays to splurge on a self-tanner if it works with you skin's chemistry. It's continuously given me streak-free, non-orangey results without the telltale smell of most faux-tanners. However, I'm the first to admit that you need to go through the prepping motions to achieve the perfect fake tan.

Here are the rules of self-tanning -- step by step.

1. Prep your skin: Shave and exfoliate the same day you self-tan. And never pick an oil-based exfoliator as the slick consistency can prevent the tanning formula from adhering to your skin.

Try: Venus and Olay Razor with two replacement cartridges ($12) and Origins Incredible Spreadable Scrub (250 mL, $27.50).

2. Moisturize dry spots... or all over: Don't forget those dry areas like your elbows, knees and feet. If they're not properly moisturized they'll pick up more colour than the rest of your body and will look splotchy. If you have normal-to-dry skin it doesn't hurt to moisturize all over.

Try: Yes to Blueberries Rejuvenating Body Lotion (170 g, $10).

3. Find your formula: If you're a newbie to self-tanners you may want to forgo the sprays. They're more difficult to apply evenly and give you greater risk of streaks. Look for a tanner with a temporary tint – that way you can cover off all the desired areas without missing any spots. Also, to avoid orange hands wear plastic gloves.

For major colour payoff, try: St. Tropez Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse (120 mL, $38). For a buildable gradual tan, try: Jergens Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer (200 mL, $10).

3 summer-ready flat sandals

The weather has been a bit of a downer lately, but it hasn't stopped me from dreaming of warmer temperatures and the shoe possibilities that come with sunnier days.

Cue the flat sandal. If I'm planning on running around throughout the day, I need a pair of shoes that are slightly more practical then wedges (though I swear wedges are actually comfortable) but still stylish at the same time.

The on-trend possibilities this year are endless, with features such as metallic straps, bold colours and even a few studs. Here are my three top picks to keep you looking cool all summer long.

Snakeskin was a huge print this past fall and it looks like it's sticking around on these black imitation leather sandals from H&M.

If you're still unsure about trying colour blocking, these metallic and orange Zara sandals are a way to incorporate bold colours into your outfit with ease.

And if you're looking for more modest footwear, these nude buckled T-strap sandals from J.Crew are fit for running errands around the city on a balmy sunny day.

Three Essential Summer Bras

Wearing white may help you stay cool during balmy summer days but figuring out what to wear under your light coloured clothes can be tricky.

I avoided wearing white for the longest time because I found myself self-conscious about my bra showing through. Once I discovered that unlike white bras, nude bras don't show through white clothing, wearing white became less intimidating. Here are three nude hued bras that are prefect for any summer outfit.

1. Lightly Lined

Ella bra in Sand Dollar, Aerie, $29.50

A lightly lined bra with a demi cup gives you enough lift without having to wear a bulky pushup bra on a hot day and isn't visible when wearing a v-neck or sweetheart neckline.

2. Convertible

The options are endless with a convertible bra. They can be worn strapless, one-strap, cross-back or halter to give you enough support without your bra straps showing while you're wearing your sundresses and tanks.

3. Bralette

Bralettes are great for small chests since they are often wireless and unlined—but they don’t provide as much support as regular bras. They’re also handy when you’re wearing a top or dress with low-cut armholes and don’t want your bra to show.

Available at Aerie, Change and Gap.

Wear This, Not That: Wedding Guest Attire

I have here the second installment of wear this, not that. 'Tis the season for love—so it seems appropriate to touch upon the age old question of what to wear to a wedding.

Pink Shift Dress, $99.99. Ruched Satin Dress, $149.99. Both Le Chateau.

Is the occasion black tie or cocktail? Is the bride's personal style granola or pretty pretty princess? Is the venue at the swankest hotel in town or at a farm? Things can get complicated—fast! Finding a dress that's stylish, affordable and has the ability to be repeated a few times for your summer wedding circuit is easier said than done.

I absolutely adore this sleek and simple shift dress on the left from Le Château. The cut is timeless but the hot pink hue is "now," making the dress current. It's a versatile frock that can take you to a day wedding to something more formal by means of adding a few accessories. A statement necklace here a Swarovski power clutch there, then anchor the look with some platform pumps and there you have it—perfection.

As for the blue dress, my hate runs deep. First of all no one looks good in cheap satin. Secondly it's teal, ruched and a halter style—it looks like a prom dress gone wrong. Another glaring problem with the dress is that it can't transition into other settings—it is what it is.

WEDDING GUEST FASHION RULES

  • Don't even think about wearing white. I don't care if you have a new flouncy chiffon dress in bone, cream or ivory, leave it in the closet. Don't steal the brides thunder.
  • If the celebration is an outdoor event skip the stilettos. Unless of course your wedding gift is aerating the happy couples lawn. Opt for strappy sandals or wedge heels.
  • Be tasteful. Unless you're attending an Irish travelers wedding (My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding) stay away from anything risky. Nothing in a neon colour, no mini skirts and stay away from super high heels.
  • If the invitation didn't specify a dress code then use common sense. Take the venue and the time of day into consideration, or better yet send an email and ask.

Heat Wave Survival Guide

All week I've felt like I'm walking into a pressure cooker as soon as I step outside. The extreme heat and humidity in much of Canada is being caused by the dreaded heat dome. Temperatures are ranging between 35 c and 40c (not including humidex levels,) making it very difficult to face the day ahead.

The question many of us are asking ourselves in the morning is: What the heck do I wear to work?! I really want to sport a swimsuit, but I don't think that's going to fly with my co-workers, or my fellow TTC passengers.

So what's a girl to do? I've compiled a few ideas on how to survive the commute to the office without your makeup melting off and some tips on how to prevent a heat induced wardrobe malfunctions (sweat patches).

BARE ESSENTIAL MAKEUP

EMERGENCY TRAVEL MUST HAVE

I packed this Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray (50 mL, $10) into my purse a few weeks back and I'm *SO* glad I did. A spritz of water to the face and chest instantly makes you feel refreshed—especially on a non air conditioned TTC car. So much so that the dude next to me asked me to spray him down. His thoughts on the product—"Damn, that's some good H20."

KEEP THE SHINE DOWN

Blotting papers are a oily skinned girl's best friend—especially when the heat is on. Each Sephora pack comes with 100 bamboo charcoal blotting papers. The  papers are powder free and charcoal has a high degree of absorbency. These sheets are effective and won't disturb your makeup—promise.

WHAT TO WEAR/WHAT NOT TO WEAR

With scorching temps sticking around for the long-haul picking the right outfit can fluster even the most seasoned fashion gals. All you want to do is put on something that feels fresh and lightweight but still makes you look pretty (and not skanky).

Here are some things to remember when you are standing in front of your closet:

  • Steer clear of anything too fitted or short.
  • Look for a silhouette that is loose and flirty—nothing too clingy.
  • Choose fabrics in natural materials like cotton, bamboo or linen.
  • Stay away from silk—it can leave you with some major sweat patches.
  • Lighter colours are best because they reflect light and heat.

5 Tips For Mastectomy Swimsuit Shopping

One-piece swimsuit, $63; and matching sarong, $43.50; both Nicole Jane

One-piece swimsuit, $63; and matching sarong, $43.50; both Nicola Jane.

It goes without saying - summer is the hardest shopping season for women - especially in the swimwear department. That fitting room, the fluorescent lights and those itsy bitsy bikinis can become a personal nightmare.

And if you’ve recently undergone a mastectomy, you’re facing a whole new set of fit issues when dressing your body. And the last thing you need is a horrible experience finding a swimsuit. Keep these tips in mind when shopping:

  • Opt for suits that have good coverage, featuring higher necklines and armholes to cover surgery scars.
  • Look for suits that fit close to the chest wall. This way, when you move or bend over, the swimsuit won’t sag, revealing hollowness or scars.
  • If you don’t like the look and cut of mastectomy swimsuits, try finding a non-mastectomy one that has removal pads. You can insert your own breast forms, or sew a pair in.
  • If you plan to be active in your swimsuit, consider wearing a rash guard over your bikini top. Not only do these surfer tops offer secure coverage, they also come in a variety of cute colours and styles for women.
  • Try to find an ADP (Assistive Devices Program) registered vendor. These retailers offer a wide range of products and incredibly knowledgeable staff.

Here is a list of retailers that specialize in mastectomy swimsuits:

Online: Jodee, SwimOutlet, SwimsuitsForAll, Lands’ End, Nicola Jane, Veronica Brett, Swinwear Hut and Marks & Spencer.

West Coast: Just Swimwear, Sharon's Mastectomy Shoppe, Simply Best Swim & Activewear and Swimwear Etc..

Ontario: Brand New You Mastectomy Boutique, Fran's Mastectomy Boutique, Greta’s Flair, Good Night Good Morning and My Top Drawer.

Quebec: J.A. Bouré Vêtements, La Châtelaine, Lingerie Claire Bélanger, Madame Martin Corsetière Inc., Studio Equilibra Inc.

East Coast: Designed For Living Mastectomy Boutique, Elias Elegant Silhouette Inc., Felicity Mastectomy Boutique and Health Quest.

You can also search Cancer Care Society for a retailer near you.

The Sunscreen Chronicles: Josie Maran SPF 40+

With winter seemingly behind us, it's time to buck up and get hardcore about wearing sunscreen all day, every day (OK, you can skip bonfire hours). I'm assuming you wear it on your face year-round, right?

Josie Maran SPF 40+, $34 at Sephora.com

Josie Maran SPF 40+, $34 at Sephora.com

Right.

Anyway, I hear so many complain about the texture of sunscreen as their case against wearing it. "It's too greasy! Too sticky!" Ugh, I judgmentally shake my head and roll my eyes. Sunscreens have come an incredibly long way in terms of texture, scent, formulation and skin needs. So please, I beg you, wear them!

There's no point in skipping sunscreen in the morning and layering on anti-aging products at night, because the problem (fine lines, age spots, wrinkles, ect.) is only going to get worsen unless you protect in during the day.

Julia and I will be posting weekly about the sunscreens that we've tried and loved. First up is Josie Maran Protect Daily Sun Protection Argan Oil Infused SPF 40+. It's finally available in Canada (at Sephora stores) and retails for $33. It smells like a fancy beach vacation and is creamy enough that you can skip wearing your quotidian moisturizer. It's a chemical-free (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide based) alternative for your face that feels oh so amazing on and doesn't feel sticky or heavy. It also contains the restorative argan oil, as well as pomegranate and jojoba oil. Consider me obsessed.
