Ask a designer: Is it safe to mount a TV over a fireplace?

Designers Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander answer a common decorating dilemma.

Q: I've heard that flatscreen TVs can get damaged if they're hung on the wall above a fireplace. Is this something that I should be worried about? - Janice B., Windsor, Ont.

A: Good question! This isn't something we typically worry about--unless the fireplace is the only heat source in the room and is running at a fairly constant rate. If that's the case, there should be enough space left between the firebox and the television for that not to be a problem. From a design perspective, the fireplace will always compete with the television as the strongest aesthetic element in the room, so it makes sense to keep them lined up in a column.
