Design dilemma: Do all kitchen appliances need to be in the same finish?
If all your kitchen appliances are stainless steel, can you buy an appliance in another finish? Design expert Karl Lohnes has the answer.

A: The problem with mixing and matching finishes is that it can look as though you've taken a piecemeal approach to replacing appliances.
The general rule is that all major appliances should have the same finish. Fortunately, they don't have to match in terms of brand, model or style. This is great for people who don't want to buy a suite of appliances, and for those who want the option to replace appliances over time.
If you'd like some variety in the colour and finish, I suggest panelling the new dishwasher to match the surrounding cabinetry.
If you're buying a full suite of appliances and wondering what finish to choose, look to your kitchen counters for inspiration. If the colour of the countertop is very light, choose white appliances. Alternatively, if your counters have a black base, choose black appliances. For medium shades, opt for stainless steel.
