Brighten up your home for the summer

When summer comes, none of us need to be reminded to pack away our woolly winter sweaters and pull out our cool, light cotton clothing. Transitioning our wardrobes from season to season is a no-brainer. But transitioning your decorating style can have just as much of a feel-good effect.

Making your space lighter and brighter for summer doesn't have to mean blowing your budget. Simple changes can yield big results, creating an airier feeling at home. How? We checked in with design expert and Style at Home magazine's contributing style editor Karl Lohnes for his tips that will help you turn your home into a comfortable and cool summer retreat. Karl Lohnes' tips for summer decorating
1. Take away rugs and area carpets for the summer ... floors are much cooler on the feet.

2. Clean your windows inside and out. It will make the world of difference as to how bright your room will be.

3. Decorate the inside of your fireplace. Fill with a candlescape for sparkle and flame without the heat of a fire or add flowers and greenery to the wood box and place in front of the opening.

4. Replace heavy drapes and blinds with soft, gauzy fabric panels for the summer months.

5. Paint your front door a fun colour. Choose a colour opposite to the body of your house and choose a punchy color.

6. Treat yourself to pure linen bed sheets; they are long wearing and super cool during hot summer nights.

7. Install an affordable rain showerhead in the shower for a soft, rainwater-like experience each morning.

8. Add a few drops of blue to your ceiling paint colour. Blue is reflective, cool and helps to brighten a room.
