Design tips for decorating small spaces
Watch Jeffrey Fisher on CTV’s Canada AM for a tour of the condo makeover.
Designer and owner of Jeffrey Fisher Home, Jeffrey's principles of small-space design will work for any style from new traditional to pared-down modern. Here are seven tips to help maximize the look and feel of your small spaces.
1. Create zones that make small spaces as multi-functional as possible by visually dividing the space with colour, plants, accent pieces or lighting.
2. Keep layouts functional by furnishing and accessorizing with only the essentials.
3. Choose key pieces wisely making sure that they are multi-functional such as a bed with built-in storage or a table that expands and collapses as needed.
4. Use one type and colour of flooring throughout the entire space with the exception of bathrooms, to create visual flow and continuity.
5. Incorporate light reflecting surfaces such as mirror, glass, chrome and high-gloss paint finishes to bounce light around the room.
6. Hang art, it takes up little space and adds personality and colour to a room. A beautiful, patterned wallpaper will serve the same purpose if art isn't an option.
7. If privacy isn't an issue and available natural light is minimal don't forgo window coverings. Instead use window coverings that are light and simply styled.
