Should you hire a landscape designer?

Here's what to consider when you're thinking of planning a landscaping project with a professional.

You've made the decision to landscape and now you're thinking of getting a landscape designer involved – but you’re also thinking it will be a lot of money. Hiring a qualified landscape designer can actually be a money-saver and a great investment if you stick to your budget. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you are choosing one.

Don't just dive in
If you've just purchased a new home, try living with your space for a season or two before you start any major landscaping projects. You'll have a better idea of how you use the area, what you like, and what definitely needs to be changed.

Finding a landscape designer
Unfortunately, just about anyone can call themselves a landscape designer. Look for a certified landscape designer – the certification guarantees that the designer is experienced and has a technical background, which can save you time, money and disappointment.

A certified landscape designer with a combination of education and practical experience is ideal, and finding one that has completed projects that are similar to what you have in mind is your best bet.

Do your homework
Before you meet with a certified landscape designer, gather together photos that you like of projects from your neighbourhood, magazines and websites. You might find yourself pulling together a variety of projects, but a good designer will be able to pick out the common elements between the projects and establish your taste.

Talk it over with your family
Discuss your ideas with family members, especially if it's a backyard project. How do they envision the space? There are many things to take into consideration, including lawn requirements, entertaining areas, pools, hot tubs, play structures, shade and garden sheds.

Draw up a wish list
Start with a list of your favourite plants and flowers. Your landscape designer can help you sort out the ones that will thrive in your region, considering climate, exposure and soil conditions.

Take the survey along
If you can, provide your property survey to the landscape designer. These documents are usually included with the sale of a home. Knowing exact boundaries can save you from making expensive mistakes that may need to be reversed.

Rely on their support
Once the planning is complete, landscape designers can have the project tendered and advise you on the pros and cons of each contract. They can also guide you through the challenges of the building process and oversee it to make sure it's built to specifications.

Set a budget
A realistic budget for your landscaping is anywhere between 10 to 25 per cent of the value of your home. A professionally landscaped home is an investment that will increase your resale value and your enjoyment of your home.
