Photo T-shirts a snap

Help Dad show off his finest with a T-shirt decorated with photos of you.

By Jean Scobie

You need:

•T-shirt
•Photocopy or print-out of a favorite snapshot*
•Picture transfer medium (available at craft stores) or stitchless fabric glue
•Large piece of cardboard
•Plastic wrap
•Rolling pin
•Sponge
•Paper towel
•Fabric paint
•Paintbrushes
•Waxed paper
*Note: Avoid using a photo with lettering on it, as the words will appear in reverse on the transfer.

To make:

1. Cover cardboard with plastic wrap and insert into the T-shirt.

2. Cut photocopy to desired shape and lay right side up on a sheet of waxed paper. Brush transfer medium onto the right side of the picture. Spread it on heavily enough so that the image cannot be seen, approx 2 mm (1/16 in) thick.

3. Place wet transfer, face down on T-shirt. Cover with paper towel and use rolling pin to press the transfer to the fabric. Remove paper towel. Let dry 24 hours.

4. Lay a water-soaked sponge on the transfer for several minutes. With finger, gently roll the paper backing off the transfer. Use sponge to rub off fuzzy particles of paper. Let dry.

5. Paint desired design or decoration around transfer using fabric paint straight from bottle or brush on with a paintbrush.

6. To wash T-shirt, turn inside out and hand- or machine-wash in cool water on gentle cycle. Hang to dry or machine-dry on low heat.
