Knit an Aran afghan and matching pillow

Bring home a classic Aran handknit and cosy up all winter long. Designed exclusively for Canadian Living Magazine readers, our cabled afghan is knit in five separate panels so it's easy to work with. And once they're all stitched together, it's even easier to relax with. Pair it with a matching pillow and you'll have portable comfort for any room in your house.

Finished afghan measures approximately 147.5 x 117 cm (58-1/8 x 46-1/8 inches). Standard abbreviations are used. Recommended for knitters with some experience.

Supplies
 13 balls pure wool Patons Classic Merino Wool yarn (100 g) OR acrylic/wool blend Patons Decor yarn (100 g)
 One 5 mm circular knitting needle, 90 cm long
 One pair of 5 mm needles OR whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
 Cable needle
 Tapestry needle
 One 5 mm crochet hook

Tension
19 sts and 25 rows = 10 cm (4 inches) in box st pat. Work to exact tension with specified yarn to obtain satisfactory results.

To save time, take time to check tension.

Special Abbreviations

Cr9B = slip next 6 sts onto cn and leave at back of work, k3, slip last 3 sts from cn to left-hand needle, p3, knit rem 3 sts from cn.

Cr6F = slip next 3 sts onto cn and leave at front of work, p3, k3 from cn.

Cr6B = slip next 3 sts onto cn and leave at back of work, k3, p3 from cn.

C6B = slip next 3 sts onto cn and leave at back of work, k3, k3 from cn.

C6F = slip next 3 sts onto cn and leave at front of work, k3, k3 from cn.

With pair of needles, cast on 51 sts.

Row 1 (right side) : K3, [p3,k3] to end of row.
Row 2: P3, [k3,p3] to end of row.
Row 3: As Row 1.
Row 4: As Row 2.
Row 5: As Row 1.
Row 6: As Row 2.
Row 7: P3, [k3,p3] to end of row.
Row 8: K3, [p3,k3] to end of row.
Row 9: P3, [k3,p3] to end of row.
Row 10: K3, [p3,k3] to end of row.
Row 11: P3, [k3,p3] to end of row.
Row 12: K3, [p3,k3] to end of row.
These 12 rows form Box St pat.

Cont in pat until work from beg measures same length as cable panel, ending on Row 6 or Row 12; cast off in pat.

To finish:
With tapestry needle and alternating panels, stitch tog along long edges.

Top and Bottom Edging
With circular needle and right side facing, pick up and knit 221 sts evenly across top (cast-off) edge. Knit 4 rows garter st; with wrong side facing, cast off.
Rep across bottom edge.

Side Edging
With circular needle and right side facing, pick up and knit 273 sts evenly along 1 side edge. Knit 4 rows garter st; with wrong side facing, cast off.
Rep along rem side edge.

Fringe
Cut rem yarn into 38 cm (15-ins) lengths. Fold 4 strands in half; with hook, pull loop through cast-on stitch at 1 corner, then thread yarn ends through loop and tighten. Rep to make evenly spaced fringe along top and bottom edges.
