Capturing photos with a scanner

By hp.ca/homefun

Tips for making getting your digital photos to look there best

If you already have a scanner, you probably follow a few basic steps like the ones listed below. You'll need a high-quality scanner which comes with software that allows you to crop, enhance, size and colourize photos.

• Select a photo with good contrast (not too bright or dark).

• Scan one photo at a time, unless you're an expert. You'll probably need to crop it, size it to fit your document or Web page and make colour adjustments.

• When you save your scanned photos, try to group similar subjects in a single folder within your scanner application (like Adobe PhotoDeluxe). For example, batch all of your vacation shots in a file named "Family Vacations 1999" -- choose something that's easy to identify!

That's basically it! Now you can use your photos for family or personal projects.

When should I use a scanner instead of a digital camera?
A scanner is the tool of choice when you have an existing photograph or image -- such as crayon drawings, slides, or business documents. Scanners work best with two-dimensional items, although you can also scan relatively flat items.

HP ScanJet scanners are general purpose flatbed scanners that handle just about everything you need -- photos, graphics, text -- you name it. HP PhotoSmart Scanners allow you to create photographs for your PC instantly -- right at home.
