Halloween craft: Lordly lion mask

You need:
Piece each of cardboard and yellow felt, about 30.5 cm (12 in) square, for the mask
Scraps of yellow, red, orange, white, blue and brown felt for the features
Raffia or wool, in desired colours, for the mane
50 cm (19-3/4 in) elastic, 1/4 to 1/2 in (6 mm to 1.3 cm) wide, for the strap
White craft glue
Pencil, scissors, ruler and hole punch
Dinner plate, about 25.5 cm (10 in) in diameter

To make:

1.Set the plate, upside down, on the cardboard square and trace around it. Cut out the cardboard circle.

2. About one-third of the way down from the top edge of the cardboard circle, draw the eyes, then cut them out. Draw a triangular nose flap with a top edge that's about 1 cm (3/8 in) long. Leaving the top edge attached, cut out the flap along the side and bottom edges only.

3. Set the circle on the yellow felt square. Trace around the circle and the eye and nose openings. Cut out the circle and the eye and nose openings, leaving the top edge of the nose flap attached. Lining up the edges and cutouts, glue the felt to the cardboard circle. Let the glue dry.

4. Punch holes, about 1 cm apart and 1 cm in around the edge of the circle (you may need an adult to help with this).

5. On the edge of the circle near each eye, thread 1 end of the elastic through a hole and tie a knot. With the strap just above your ears, try on the mask. Make sure that the eye holes let you see out easily and that the strap isn't too loose or too tight. Adjust the placement and tightness of the strap if necessary.

6. From different colours of raffia, cut 33 cm (13 in) lengths. Holding 2 or 3 lengths together, fold them in half. Poke the loop through a hole from the front of the mask to the back. Thread the ends back through the loop and gently pull them to make a knot. Do this in each hole all around the mask to make the mane.

7. From the yellow felt scraps, cut 4 ear pieces. In pairs, line up their edges and glue them together. Let the glue dry. Starting at the bottom edge, cut a 2 cm (ß in) slit up the centre of each ear. To make each ear curve, overlap the slit edges slightly and glue them together. Let the glue dry. Spread glue along the bottom edge of each ear and glue them to the mask.

8. From the red felt, cut out 1 mouth and 2 eyebrows. From the orange felt, cut out 2 crows-feet wrinkles. From the white felt, cut out 2 eye rims and lots of teeth. From the blue felt, cut out 2 cheek stars. From the brown felt, cut out 2 ear spots. Glue on all these features. From the brown felt, cut out a nose flap that's a bit wider than the flap on the mask. Turn it upside down. Leaving the side edges unglued, glue the shortest edge of the brown flap to the mask above the mouth. Glue the opposite edge to the bottom edge of the flap on the mask to make a pop-out snout that will fit over your nose. Now put on your mask and roar!
