These funny faces will light up your picnic table or porch. Carve a smile into an acorn or butternut squash or any other small member of the gourd family.

You'll need:
• Knife
• Large spoon
• Votive candle
• Acorn or butternut squash

To hang, you'll need:
• 1.5 m (5 ft) 16-gauge wire
• Awl
• Needle-nose cutting pliers

Instructions:
With knife, cut 7 to 10 cm (2-3/4- to 4-in) circle from gourd top; discard. With spoon, scoop out seeds. With knife, cut face. Set candle inside.

To hang: With awl, make three holes around top edge at equal intervals, approx 2 cm (3/4 in) down. With pliers, cut wire into three 50 cm (19-3/4-in) lengths. Thread 1 (bottom) end of each through hole; twist to secure. Twist 3 top ends together, centred over circle, into loop.
