Hearts Aflutter

This Valentine's Day, kids can reuse popsicle sticks to make heart-shaped butterfly gifts.

Kids! Get off to a flying start on Valentine's Day - and use up those popsicle sticks you saved from last summer. Make a bunch of bright paper butterflies for your friends - or add a magnet to the back and give one to Mom or Grandma to stick up on her fridge.

You Need (for each):
Heart pattern (Click on the "see all images" button below the image at the top of this page)
Coloured paper, 20 cm (7-7/8-inches) square*
Popsicle stick
Nontoxic coloured markers*
2 plastic rolly eyes, 7 mm in diameter*
1 pom-pom, 5 mm in diameter and 1 contrasting chenille stem*
Tacky glue*
Adhesive-backed magnet (optional)*
(*Available at craft supply stores)

To Make:
Enlarge heart pattern and trace onto paper — or simply draw freehand heart that fills paper. Cut out. Curl each end of chenille stem, then place midpoint 1.5 cm (5/8-inch) down from top of stick. Twist it three times around to make head; dab with glue to secure. With head at top V, glue stick body down centre of heart to make butterfly. Glue eyes and pom-pom nose to head front. With markers, colour wings and body. Bend antennae and shape wings. If desired, adhere magnet to butterfly back.
