Custom-craft a little valentine for everyone you love. A keepsake on its own, each card could also make its statement tied atop a romantic gift. Artist Dorotea Kemenczy of Mississauga, Ont., designed this quartet to inspire you.
Start with standard-size white or manila shipping label. Onto label, glue heart using white craft glue, Podgy or glue gun for porous items, and Goop for nonporous items. Use permanent fine-tip marker, calligraphic pen or dimensional fabric paint to write message. Or, from computer printouts, newspapers or magazines, rip out word(s); using glue stick, attach to label below heart. If desired, embellish small price tag, then loop string through label as shown.
Designer's tips
• Cut hearts from materials such as punched foil, fancy card stock, felt, corrugated cardboard, textured plastic or birch bark. Or draw heart shape onto card, then fill in with a glued-on "mosaic" of cut twigs, glass or mirror, dried flowers, candies, shells or beads. Or use heart-shaped found objects.
• If planning to mount one or more cards on a background for framing, glue or pin message to background below card as shown, then frame completed collage in shadow box (available at framing and craft supply stores).
