O hole-y light

By Anna Hobbs

Make these festive tin can votives and fill your home with warmth and light.

Candles are a time-honoured part of Christmas decorating in many Canadian homes. So, just in time for the season, here's a quick, easy and inexpensive way to make pretty country-style candle holders. Give one as gift, set one in the centre of a festive table or group several on your mantel. The soft, twinkling light will warm up any celebration.

You Need (for each):

  • Clean, dry tin can with lid and label removed
  • Votive candle
  • Heat-tolerant flat black spray paint, such as engine paint (available at automotive supply stores)
  • 16-gauge hobby wire (optional)
  • Pliers (optional), vise, hammer and nails
  • Short length of dowel or old broom handle, approx 43 cm (17 in) long and 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) in diameter
  • Permanent fine-tip black marker

To Make:

1. With marker, draw star, snowflake or other Christmas motif(s) on tin. Simple outlined motifs work best. Draw motif on 1 side (front) of tin only or draw several motifs on all sides of tin.

2. With at least half of its length extending from vise parallel to the floor, secure dowel in vise. Slip tin over dowel end; with hammer and desired size nail, punch holes (approx 3 to 6 mm/1/8 to 1/4 inch apart) along drawn lines to outline each motif, turning tin as you work, if necessary.

3. If you wish to add a handle, punch hole 6 mm down from top edge of tin at each side. With pliers, cut short length of wire; insert each end into hole, form loop and secure with twist.

4. Spray paint with 1 or 2 coats; let dry between coats. Place candle inside.
