Sew a sack full of love

By Jo Calvert

Stitch up a soft-hearted gift bag for someone you love and tuck something special inside.

You'll need small fabric scraps, for heart front and back; satin lining, piping, ribbon, for bow and mini roses; lace; quilted batting; adhesive-backed Velcro fasteners; and matching thread. (Note: Use a 1 cm/3/8 in seam allowance throughout.)

To make:
Trace desired-size heart on paper. Mark a line 1 cm out from edge. Cut paper pattern along second line. On 1 side edge, mark an X 3.5 cm (1-3/8 inches) up from bottom point of heart, then another X 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) up from the first. With pattern, cut 2 hearts from fabric, 2 from satin, 2 from batting.

Heart front: Trim lace bottom edge as desired. Lay lace, wrong side down, on right side of heart front. Machine zigzag together along lace bottom edge. Trim lace top edge even with heart front top edge. Press. With raw edges even, baste piping to right side of heart front. With edges even and right sides together, pin heart front to lining; then pin both to 1 batting heart.

With batting side down stitch together around edge, leaving open between Xs. Clip corners and curves. Trim batting seam allowance close to stitch line. Turn right side out. Fold under seam allowance around opening; slipstitch closed. Press. Topstitch close to edge. Repeat for heart back, omitting piping.

Machine-quilt heart front and heart back as desired. With edges even and lining sides together, slipstitch heart back to heart front, leaving open between Xs. Reinforce stitching at either end of opening. Along inside edge of opening, apply Velcro or stitch snap fasteners.

Tack bow and roses to heart front.
