I have a two-year-old son who is a problem eater. He still eats beginner babyfood and will not accept anything with texture such as toddler food. He will eat things like pizza and peanut butter sandwiches but will gag on pasta, rice, etc. He also has a habit of holding food in his mouth and not swallowing and ends up spitting it out or in some cases gagging, resulting in vomiting. Any advice?

Dr Mom, Some children are very particular about the texture of their food. The fact that your baby can manage pizza tells me there is nothing wrong with his ability to feed. I'd take a relaxed attitude as long as he is gaining weight appropriately. Try and include his favourite foods at each meal because the more enjoyment, the more willing your little guy will be to explore other foods and textures. I'd only give him little bits to eat at a time so less food is available to be stored in his cheeks. Most communities have feeding clinics for kids with problems similar to your little 'squirrel.' So, if things don't settle down, you should discuss this situation with your physician. --Cathryn Tobin
