I am 12 and I can never get to sleep when my parents aren't home. I also can't get to sleep before midnight on a regular basis. I haven't slept in my bed for at least a year! My parents don't understand and sometimes tease me about my problems. I don't know what to do. Can you help me?

If you have a question for one of our experts, please click here. The first step to solving a problem is to recognize it exists. I think you're a very insightful young lady because not only have you named the problem but you've taken active steps to solve it by seeking help. Congratulations! There are many reasons for having difficulty sleeping. Anxiety, ineffective sleep habits, too much caffeine, and medications that can interfere with sleep are all considerations. But it sounds like you're not only suffering from sleep problems but also you from feeling misunderstood. The fact that you haven't slept in your own bed for a long time suggests you should have a chat with your healthcare provider who will help you get to the root of your sleep problems. Once you know the factors that are interfering with your sleep, you can take active steps to solve them. So, perhaps you could ask your parents to make an appointment with your physician to discuss things. Please let me know how things go.
