Hot new toys for 2006

Keep tabs on kid fads with our list of fresh new toys for 2006.

By Carlye Malchuck

Do you have a child's birthday coming up? Never sure what to buy the kid who already seems to have it all? Earlier this year, the International Toy and Hobby Convention in Toronto showcased what's new on the market. Here are six hot toys selected from displays at the convention to watch for in 2006 -- some are new and unique products, while others are old favourites with a fresh new twist!

Moon Sand (Ages 3 and up)
It looks like sand and it feels like sand, but it plays like dough! Children can mold, shape and play with Moon Sand and the makers say it will never dry out. Once your child has created his masterpiece, simply bake the creation and the sand will keep forever. Cool factor: If your aspiring Michelangelo decides his sculpture's not his finest work, bake it again and the creation will crumble and you can reuse the sand. The sand is also water-resistant, so your castle can have a moat without compromising the creation. Moon Sand will be offered in a variety of colours and will feature sets including monster trucks, castles and a farm. (Coming fall 2006.)

Strawberry Shortcake (Ages 4 and up)
The scented doll with the signature freckles burst onto the scene in the '80s. More than 25 years later she's had a makeover and is set to hit stores once again. Strawberry Shortcake is being relaunched with a new 'do, wardrobe and scents. The new collection includes the Strawberry Shortcake and friends plush dolls, PlayDate Pals and the Tiny Treat Playset. Of course, her freckles are still intact.

Playmobil Garden Center (Ages 4 and up)
This popular toy line, sold in more than 50 countries, is releasing a Garden Center for 2006. Meant to reflect gardening in an urban environment, the collection comes with the Flora Shop Center, plant beds, a greenhouse and much more. Some of the plant beds have plasticine to dig up and many of the flowers will grow when you water them. Also new for 2006 is the Cargo Ship line, which includes the ship, beacons and loading equipment. For more information, visit www.playmobil.com.
