Read our 7 tips for raising healthy, active kids.
Talk, don't interrogate
"No one responds well to a barrage of questions," Lynn cautions. "How would you like to sit down to a nice dinner only to be asked whether you did good work today?" She suggests chatting easily and telling stories. "The kids will chime in with their stories, as well. And when they do, listen, even if they ramble." Or, Lynn suggests, talk about things that'll attract your child's attention, like a favourite television show or a movie that you may have watched together.
Make it relevant
"With older kids, you can chat about stories in the news -- but when you do, express your opinion, then let them express theirs," says Lynn. "Don't tell them that their take on the story is stupid. You can say you disagree and why, but don't put them down."
Relax and enjoy each other
If your children are at an age where they love jokes and riddles, relax and enjoy the fun, says Lynn. "When we take every opportunity with our children to teach (or lecture), we miss the fun -- and fun is not only relaxing and stress-reducing, but it enhances the relationship as well."
The bottom line
Use all the same good manners you would use with adult friends, says Lynn.
