Fatherhood: it's one of those things that you just can't understand until you become a dad. That's what I've heard, anyway. But what is it exactly about fatherhood that turns grown men into sentimental, sensitive sweethearts? I talked to a few dads about their favourite thing about being a parent. Here's what they had to say:
A guy at work told me something a friend of his said, and although strange, it is quite true. He said, "There's nothing better in the morning than waking up to a poopy diaper." And I have to say, it's true. Maybe you have to be a parent to understand that. Obviously, it's not the diaper itself, but everything that goes around it. It's that it's how you start your day -- a daily reminder that you love someone, and that you are loved and needed.
--Edward Lounsbury, father of 4-month-old Eve
I like that it's hard. I like that every encounter with her is a test, and that the reward is a healthy, happy girl. Ask me again in 13 years and my answer might be different, but for now that's it. Oh, and her soundless, open-mouthed laugh. That just slays me.
--Brendan Christie, father of 5-month-old Kira
What is great about being a dad? Coming through the door after a long day at work, and seeing his face light up like you just gave him the best gift he could ever receive. Then having him run over to you so he can climb up on you and proceed to tell you in his own way what he has done all day. How can you not smile at that?
--John Beattie, father of 14-month-old Jake
Every day with my son is a blessing. Watching the rapid development of his personality provides lots of laughs and brings joy into our home. Seeing the world through his eyes, and watching his reactions to learning and seeing new things brings tremendous joy to my life. Being a dad keeps me grounded and makes everyday troubles seem less complicated. The highlight of my day is hearing his little voice exclaiming "Daddy!"
--David Ehmann, father of 20-month-old Joshua
My favourite thing about fatherhood is spending time with my daughter. There is nothing in this world that I enjoy more than her company, whether playing sports or just sitting down and watching a little tube. This also gives me a reason to feel young again. (I go to the park and swing and play catch!) The thought of walking through the door after work and knowing she'll be there to greet me just makes me want to get there quicker. To see her grow scares the heck out of me, but it also amazes me how great she is and I wonder how great she will be. Don't get me wrong -- there are rough spots! Sometimes I want to just go home and relax, but help is needed with homework. "DAD, I'M BORED!" are famous words in my house. But if I do nothing else right in my life, I know I've done one right thing.
--Rui Costa, father of Samantha, 9
