What makes a good parent? 8 opinions on good parenting

Canadian parents share their hard-won advice on child rearing and what it takes to be a good mom or dad.

By Natalie Bahadur

“Being affectionate and loving with your child, and recognizing their individuality is so important. But at the same time, it’s equally important to have high expectations for them and actively encourage them to meet their potential. Also, given all the obese and future diabetic kids out there, a good parent is one who reads up on the latest news on health and nutrition and leads by example, feeding their kids a healthy diet, being active with them and teaching them about nutrition. Exposing them to different experiences, cultures and cuisines will also help make them interested, engaged, worldly global citizens. Also, thinking about the legacy you're leaving your child's generation and therefore protecting natural resources and human rights by buying organic, fair-trade groceries. I can't be a good parent if I allow produce that poisons the soil and groundwater of children living in other countries into my home, or use that to feed my child. Being a good parent includes making the political personal.”
Yuki Hayashi

“I think the best parents are really plugged into both their child's personality and developmental stage. The parents I admire are quick to point out that their introverted kid needs more time to warm up to a new situation, or that for their three-year-old, there really is a difference between a sandwich cut into triangles or squares. At the same time, those parents know when their kids really are ready to take on more chores or learn basic social etiquette, and don't back down. And of course, the best parents are always willing to get off their rear ends and really get in there.”

“What makes a good parent? To be a good parent, you have to be involved and interested in what your children are doing. When your child is young, you have to get down on your hands and knees and see the world through their eyes. I think it's really important to make every moment with your children count. You have to give them your undivided attention. Finally, it goes without saying that you have to make sure you're the most influential person in their life. Otherwise they can get swallowed up by the world.”
Jeff Mackie

“In my opinion, a good parent is someone who is patient. A good parent is someone who showers their child with hugs and cuddles and takes the time to listen to their child whether they want to recount a funny story or let you know a friend has hurt their feelings. A good parent is a person who finds a way to make sure their child always knows “home” is a safe and secure place where they are loved unconditionally. It’s tough being a good parent!”
