Goldie Mercer submitted her fine burger recipe to the Kid Approved Cookbook. Serve with carrot sticks and corn on the cob when in season, or kernels when not.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp wheat germ, (or bread or cracker crumbs)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
  • 1 tomato, sliced

Preparation

In bowl and using fork, beat egg; mix in wheat germ, onion, water, salt and pepper. Gently mix in beef.

Dip hands in water and gently shape beef into four 1/2-inch (1 cm) thick patties.

Place on greased grill over medium-high heat; close lid and grill, turning once, until no longer pink inside and meat thermometer registers 170°F (75°C), about 10 minutes. (Don't press or flatten with spatula during grilling.)

Or place under preheated element and broil, turning once, for 10 minutes. Or place in nonstick skillet over medium heat and cook, turning once, for 10 minutes.

Sandwich burger and tomato slice inside each bun.
