4 tips to keep your fridge clean and odour free

Keeping your fridge clean and odour-free is an absolute necessity for any avid cook. Here are 4 of our favourite Test Kitchen tips to make sure that your fridge is well taken care of! 1. Set a schedule: Determine which day of the week will be your 'clean the fridge' day. This may sound daunting, but taking a few minutes to do this every week will save you the trouble of having to spend much more time tidying up when you haven't cleared out your fridge in a long time! A good idea is to coordinate this day along with your garbage pickup schedule. 2. Create a checklist: Have a quick checklist of things to look over when you clean your fridge. This includes checking the expiry dates of products and making sure none of your produce has started to wilt or turn moldy. 3. Sanitize: Every other week, take out the drawers of your fridge and run them under warm water, washing them with a sponge and liquid dish soap. Wipe down the walls and other surfaces of the fridge with a food-safe multi-purpose spray or warm soapy water. 4. Prevent bad odours: To prevent any bad smells, add an open container of baking soda to one of the shelves in your fridge. The baking soda will absorb any of the bad smells, which will in turn keep all of your food smelling the way it should. Mark the date at which you opened the package on the container and change it for a new one every month. Photography by Jennifer Bartoli
