Confession - I don't always wash my fruit

I have a confession. I don't always wash fruit. I know I'm supposed to (all those harmful chemical pesticides, dirt from the field and microbes from many hands touching and all that), but sometimes I don't. A Huffington Post article this week got me thinking about my fruit washing habits. pear Sometimes it's because of laziness (it looks clean, so why bother?) I have also not been consistently washing my fruit for years, and it hasn't killed me yet, so I think why start now? When I do wash fruit, the most it gets is a quick rinse under cold water and a dry with a kitchen towel. I know that eating unwashed fruit basically guarantees that I am eating pesticides, but on an apple, it only is trace amounts. Organic fruit has less pesticides, but not zero and so to me it's not worth the extra expense. In the morning I will grab an apple or pear from the (unwashed) fruit bowl to take with me for a snack later. Later comes and I am usually not able to wash the apple, so I peel off the sticker and give it a quick rub on my pants. Good enough right? In this case, I think it's better to eat unwashed fruit rather than no fruit at all. Tell me: What do you think? Do you always wash your fruit? Are you concerned about pesticides on your food?   Photography by Leah Kuhne
