What are sweet potatoes?
Sweet potatoes are a healthy root vegetable packed with rich sources of fibre, vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and antioxidants. These spunky tubers, usually deep orange in colour, are sweet, tender when cooked.

How to shop for sweet potatoes
We asked Test Kitchen Food Specialist Amanda Barnier for tips on shopping for sweet potatoes at the market. She advises shoppers to choose firm potatoes without cracks, soft spots, bruises or signs of sprouting, "and feel heavy for their size," she says.

How to store sweet potatoes
Barnier says sweet potatoes are quite perishable. Instead of in the fridge - which is too moist - keep them in a cool, dry and dark place for up to one week.

How does a food specialist eat her sweet potatoes? "I love to add sweet potatoes to stews, soups and risotto," Barnier says. "They puree beautifully, making them a great topping to casseroles and an easy side dish."

Sweet potato or yam?
A nightshade cousin to the white potato and tomato, sweet potatoes are often mistaken for another root vegetable look-alike: the yam.

"Sweet potatoes have no relation (to yams)," explains Barnier, "though they can be used interchangeably in most recipes calling for sweet potatoes. The darker variety of sweet potato has a dark orange skin and a bright, sweet orange flesh."
