Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter , softened1/4 cup butter, softened

  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 14 slices egg bread 14 slices egg bread
  • 1-1/4 cups milk 1-1/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup whipping cream 1/4 cup whipping cream
  • 4 eggs 4 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 pinch salt 1 pinch salt
  • Sautéed Apples:
  • 2 apples , (10 oz/300 g total)2 apples, (10 oz/300 g total)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp packed brown sugar 3 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • Topping:
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Preparation

Sautéed Apples: Peel, core and cut apples into 1/2-inch (1 cm) dice. In skillet, melt butter over medium heat; cook brown sugar and cinnamon, stirring, for 1 minute. Add apples; cook, stirring often, until tender and sauce is thickened, about 12 minutes. Transfer to bowl and let cool.

Stir together butter, sugar and cinnamon; spread on 7 pieces of the bread. Sandwich with remaining bread. Trim crusts and cut each sandwich into 4 pieces. Add to apples and gently toss to combine. Spread in greased 8-inch (2 L) square glass baking dish.

In bowl, whisk together milk, cream, eggs, vanilla and sa< pour evenly over bread mixture to coat. Refrigerate for 1 hour. (Make-ahead: Refrigerate for up to 24 hours.)

Topping: Stir sugar with cinnamon; sprinkle over top. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven until puffed and golden, about 50 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
