With lots of nutty flavour and texture, this hot cereal is an enticing change from plain old oatmeal. Look for Bob's Red Mill Mixed 10-Grain Cereal in most grocery, bulk and health food stores. It's great served with milk and a pat of butter.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups 10-grain cereal
  • 1 apple, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds, (optional)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup golden raisins
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 cups milk

Preparation

In bowl, stir together cereal, apple, almonds (if using), sugar, raisins, salt and cinnamon; pour in milk and 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) water, blending well. Scrape into greased 8-inch (2 L) square glass baking dish.

Bake in centre of 350°F (180°C) oven until liquid is absorbed and grains are softened, about 50 minutes. (Make-ahead: Let cool. Refrigerate in airtight container for up to 3 days. Serve warm.)
