Ingredients

  • 2 pears , peeled and cored2 pears, peeled and cored
  • 2 apples , peeled and cored2 apples, peeled and cored
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 4 tsp granulated sugar 4 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch salt 1 pinch salt
  • 6 whole cloves 6 whole cloves
  • 2 whole star anise 2 whole star anise
  • 1 stick cinnamon , about 2 inches/5 cm long1 stick cinnamon, about 2 inches/5 cm long

Preparation

Cut pears into bite-size chunks; chop apples. In small saucepan, combine pears, apples, lemon juice, sugar, salt, cloves, star anise, cinnamon and 2 tbsp (25 mL) water. Cover and bring to simmer; cook for 10 minutes. Uncover; cook until pears are very tender and apples break down to make thick sauce, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool. (Make-ahead: Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days; serve at room temperature.)
