Cheer on the team or celebrate a special day with a cake decorated like their team jersey. A basket weave piping tip (or star tip) will make wide, flat stripes.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups butter, softened
  • 2-1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1-1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2-1/4 cups buttermilk
  • example.

Preparation

Place cake on cake board or tray. Using serrated knife and starting at short side of cake, cut off 2-inch (5 cm) wide strip. Cut strip in half crosswise on the diagonal to form sleeves.

On short side of large piece of cake, cut half-circle for neckline about 4 inches (10 cm) wide and 2 inches (5 cm) deep. Turn cake board neck side up.

Remove 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) of the icing to small bowl; tint desired colour. Set aside. Attach sleeves to top edges on sides of cake with white icing. Spread 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) of the white icing over top and sides of cake, creating thin masking layer to seal in crumbs. Chill until firm, about 30 minutes.

Spread remaining white icing over sleeves. Remove 1/2 cup (125 mL) of the tinted icing to small bowl; tint dark colour for stripes and set aside. Spread remaining tinted icing over front of shirt; chill until firm, about 30 minutes.

Using tip of knife, outline number on shirt. With piping bag fitted with small plain tip, pipe dark icing over outline. With piping bag fitted with large plain tip, fill in number with white icing. With piping bag fitted with basket-weave tip, pipe stripes along edges of sleeves, shoulders and bottom of shirt. (Make-ahead: Cover loosely with plastic wrap; refrigerate for up to 24 hours.)
